Why do we celebrate Pride?
Way back on the 28th of June 1969 in New York City, a gay bar was raided by New York City Police, sparking protests and riots which lasted 6 days! These riots were known as the Stonewall Riots and helped to galvanise the gay movement.
Every year since then, Pride marches have taken place to commemorate the riots and what was originally a one-day event, has gradually turned into a whole month of celebrations, promoting diversity, tolerance and acceptance.
What is the meaning of the rainbow Pride logo?

The rainbow flag symbol was designed by Gilbert Baker to represent the ‘all encompassing’ nature of the LGBTQ+ movement and each colour has a symbolic meaning, representing a celebration of diversity. One of the colours (turquoise) has had to be removed due to production issues to become the 6-colour flag we know today.

Did you know ? The idea was believed to be based on Judy Garland’s well-loved song ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,’’ a song which is played every year during the celebrations, although Baker himself said that the inspiration was “More about The Rolling Stones and their song She’s a Rainbow.”
How is Pride celebrated?
Colourful carnivals and parades are held worldwide, along with marches, rallies, concerts, parties and shows, attracting huge crowds.
How does Pride benefit people?
Pride allows those who may have been previously ostracised to be accepted and included, making for better well-being and self-worth. It educates people into understanding the need for individuality, freedom of expression, inclusion, tolerance and diversity. Check out this video on Youtube that we came across:-
